The Northern Territory Voluntary Euthanasia Society (NTVES) is a dying-with-dignity and voluntary euthanasia society based in Darwin, Northern Territory.
It was formed in 1995 after the passage of The Rights of the Terminally Ill Act in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly.
The legislation made the Northern Territory the first place in the world to legalise voluntary assisted dying.
However, the groundbreaking legislation was overruled by the federal Parliament less than a year later, with a new law that blocked both of Australia’s territories from making laws on the issue.
After years of fighting for the right to legislate on the issue, the Restoring Territory Rights Bill passed federal parliament in 2022, removing the decades-long ban.
The bill was sponsored by NT MP Luke Gosling and the ACT’s Alicia Payne.
The NT Government has appointed an Advisory Panel to help formulate up to date legislation.
